Poison by Bridget Zinn -- Book Review (Debut Novel)

An charming and funny adventure story about a poisons master named Kyra and her little piglet, who travel through the kingdom to search for the princess she has to kill.

Poison by Bridget Zinn

Genre: Young Adult / Fantasy / Quest

The back book flap indicated that this was Bridget Zinn's debut novel, but she passed away in 2011 from colon cancer, so it looks like this will be the only novel we'll see from her. Her imagination is delightfully playful, so it saddens me that we won't be seeing any more products of her imagination.

Published: 2013
From the book flap:

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a skilled potions master, is the one who knows that her kingdom is on the verge of destruction--which means she is the only one who can save it. With no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom's future ruler, who also happens to be her best friend.

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart...misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the King's Army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At elast she's not alone. She's armed with her vital potions, a too-cute piglet, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can't stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

It took about two chapters for me to get used to the frequently abrupt, short sentences that felt like staccato. Zinn's short sentences, however, are much better suited for the witty conversations between the characters, and feel at home once the story unfolds and turns into a thrilling roller coaster adventure. As the pace picked up, I could NOT put the book down. It was that good.

I just love how the details reveal themselves like the layers of an onion. It is a deceptively simple story that makes more sense and gets more interesting as one progresses through the novel. What's great about the quest plot structure is that we get to explore a good amount of the kingdom of bustling marketplaces, pastures, and forests. I was reluctant to leave the world and its strong heroine Kyra.

What I'd like to dine on while reading this book:
  • apple cider
  • mashed potatoes and peas (Kyra's dinner at a pub, the novel cleverly avoids any mention of her eating pork)
  • springberry pie (if springberries existed in our world)
